Herd Immunity and the COVID-19 Pandemic: Can We End it Once and For All?

It’s been nearly two years since the first case of COVID-19, or Bird Flu 2.0, was reported in San Francisco. Infection with this new strain of the flu virus resulted in 47 deaths before the pandemic was contained and declared over on June 19, 2015. Though it’s been nearly three years since that outbreak, we still live in fear of another COVID-19 outbreak from countries where it has yet to be fully eradicated—notably Indonesia and Vietnam—and what would happen if the disease spread to more developed countries outside of Southeast Asia.

Why we need herd immunity to end this pandemic

Why we need herd immunity to end this pandemic . By using a preventative strategy, called herd immunity, where as many people as possible are vaccinated with the vaccine, and by preventing contact with those who have contracted COVID-19, we can bring an end to this pandemic. One of the first questions that comes up when considering whether or not we will be able to end this pandemic is how long does COVID-19 live outside of its host? The answer is not very long at all, with reports indicating that after just four hours outside of its host, COVID-19 begins to die off. These facts make prevention through vaccination especially important in ending this outbreak sooner rather than later.

Just how far could herd immunity get us?

As the world continues to grapple with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there is one question on everyone's mind: can herd immunity put an end to this once and for all? The answer, in a word, is no. Herd immunity could never fully protect us from COVID-19 because of two reasons. First of all, herding only protects those who are vaccinated. Secondly, there are always those who refuse vaccines or have not been able to be vaccinated for other reasons (such as pregnancy). Without these people being vaccinated or otherwise protected from infection by a vaccine then the virus will still spread in those populations where vaccination rates are low.

Where are we in relation to reaching herd immunity anyway?

The answer to whether or not herd immunity can end the COVID-19 pandemic is a bit complicated. As of right now, we don't know exactly where we stand in relation to reaching herd immunity. Some experts say that we're still far away from achieving it, while others believe we're getting closer every day.

CIVD-19 Vaccines on the Horizon – Part 1

With the promising news of several vaccines on the horizon for the COVID-19 pandemic, many are wondering if herd immunity is finally within reach. But what exactly is herd immunity and how close are we to achieving it?

The Future of Ending the COVID-19 Pandemic with Vaccine Immunity

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to ravage the world, scientists are working tirelessly to develop a vaccine that can provide immunity against the virus. But can herd immunity really end the pandemic?
